Joseph Späh The Hindenburg
Joseph Späh vs Mechanical Destiny It is argued that Späh climbed from the freight area to the top of the interior of the ship (a feat that he was very capable of accomplishing), to place a time-bomb near the aft end of the ship (where the explosion occurred). However, the airship had a crew of 61 people, many of whom were walking around the interior of the ship on various catwalks to monitor systems during the flight. Climbing to the top of the airship would have increased the chances of him being discovered and would have been an unnecessary risk to take when he could have placed the alleged time-bomb near the bottom of a hydrogen cell (faster and less chance of discovery) to achieve the same result.

Additionally, Späh was required to have an escort present with him when he accessed the restricted area of the vessel, and the Hindenburg had several plainclothes intelligence officers on board that were actively looking for threats to the airship during the flight.1 Surely, the behavior of the famous acrobat contortionist, with an unusual request to be granted access to a restricted area of the airship, must have been something that they were monitoring.
